RE: Timing Belt |

Recommended interval for the 1.8T timing belt is 105000 miles. HOWEVER.... However, in the course of my time of repairing VWs, I have never seen the belt last this long. 60-75K is the time to seriously consider the service. Dealership costs about $1200 with water pump for this service! You can buy a kit on dieselgeek.com for $400 and have someone you know install it. If you choose to run the recommended belt time you will blow the timing belt and be looking at a cylinder head replacement for around $4-5000.

Yes, I've seen it at some VW service provider too, timing belt can last up to 100000miles but you're not sure about the performance anymore and maybe it can cause some problems to other parts of your ride. Even though you don't have the mileage, time alone can weaken your belts, 8 yrs old never changed, i would highly recommend it being done.
