A tractor trailer that was eight tons overweight caused a multi-vehicle crash that closed the Long Island Expressway for hours Wednesday morning, injuring eight parents traveling with their schoolchildren in charter buses and snarling traffic during the morning rush hour for miles, Nassau police said.
The three-vehicle wreck happened at 8:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the LIE at Exit 39 in Old Westbury. The westbound lanes of the expressway was closed for nearly four hours after the collision.
Bryan Pacelli, of Syosset, who drove a car that was jammed under the rig, was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with internal injuries. None of the injuries were life-threatening, police said.
Investigators haven't determined the cause of the crash.
Truck driver Jose Ortiz, 49, of Winston-Salem, N.C., was cited with multiple violations, including a missing tax sticker, bald tires and improper registration for weight. He was also cited for operating an overweight vehicle.
"I feel bad I couldn't control it," Ortiz said of the rig. Glancing at the twisted metal of the 2001 Audi TT Coupe pinned under the rig, Ortiz was relieved the car's driver, Pacelli, who turns 39 today, survived. "I feel bad. ... Thank God the man is alive," he added.
Police said Ortiz was traveling west when the rig swerved from the center lane into the left lane and struck Pacelli's Audi. The Audi became jammed under the trailer and was dragged by the big truck before both slammed into the retaining wall dividing the western and eastern lanes.
Meanwhile, one of two Classic Coach charter buses from the Rocky Point School District -- one with fifth-graders, the other with parents -- that was heading for a chorus festival in Manhattan -- crashed into the rear of the trailer after the rig crushed the Audi.
Eight passengers on the bus carrying adults were injured, but they were later treated and released from area hospitals, police said. The bus carrying the children from Rocky Point School District wasn't involved in the crash.
Pacelli, an Audi dealer sales manager heading for work in Great Neck, had to be cut out of the wreckage before being airlifted to NUMC. He was listed in stable condition Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
"The guy in the Audi is a lucky man," Det. Alexander Barnych of Nassau's Third Squad said. "He's very fortunate to have survived."
An overweight rig is dangerous because the handling and braking are greatly compromised, Old Westbury police Sgt. Richard Conlon said.
The trailer, which had a gross maximum weight of 80,000 pounds, was 16,000 pounds overweight when it crashed.
Police said the truck was owned by Englewood Cliffs, N.J.-based Intruck Leasing Corp., while the trailer was owned by EMH Consulting Company of East 93rd Street in Brooklyn. Neither could be reached Wednesday for comment.
The charter buses -- one with 45 parents, the other with 49 students -- were heading to New York University for the Kod?ly Organization of New York's "Voices United."
After the crash, the student bus pulled over and the children were told that everyone was OK, school official said.
Many of the parents and children immediately joined each other, while others met up at either North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset or Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, where the parents were treated and released.
Children used cell phones to call parents or relatives not on the trip. The caretakers rushed to school and waited for the children to return.
Kate Thomas, 57, of Rocky Point, waited for her granddaughter, Shannon Smith, 10.
"She called me and said she's OK," Thomas said. "She said all the kids were OK but some were crying because their parents were on the bus."
Glenn Grossmann, 43, of Miller Place, hugged his daughter, Kelli, 10, when she arrived at the school.
"I think all the kids were relieved to see their parents waiting for them," he said. |
