Rear Shock questions - Anyone else tow? |
|
Hi Folks!
I have a small trailer which weighs about 100 lbs that I use to trailer my sportbike out of the flat lands of Florida a half dozen times a year. The tongue weight with the bike on the trailer it is about 60lbs but when I add the little womans luggage in the trunk and assorted items in the back seat -beer - coolers - helmets - boots etc we tend to hit the bottom edge of the hitch on speed bumps and when pulling out of gas stations with a dip in the road.
Is there a way to raise the back end about 2-inches and still have the nice compliant suspension I have now? Is there a shim kit or something simple....trying not to rebuild the car or add air shocks.
I did a search here but came up blank and the internet has not been easy to google this.
Many thanks![/b]

Hi,
I was just wondering what specifically, you have done to your rear suspension as i also will be towing a bike( i would be interseted in maybe purchasing such a product). I was curious of what jetta( features) you tow with as i have a 1999 2.0l gas , auto, and i was wondering if it would have enough power for towing one dirt bike OR one quad?( i would also town on flat/ foothill land type highways). I was also curious on wat type of trailer you use for towing?
Thanks,
Matt

I have a 550 pound sport bike on a small trailer I purchased from Harbor Freight and added a ramp/track for the bike. The trailer weighs about 150 pounds and can handle up to 1500 pounds.
Behind my Jetta 2008 2.5 Liter gas auto vehicle it is fine....in fact I cruise at 80-85 mph for full tanks of gas at a time without a shimmy, wable, or noise. In the mountains I tend to pu tit in "sport" mode to let the engine rev as needed.
Only problem I am having is that the trailer hitch will scrape the pavement when leaving a gas station or any small slope. I have NOT found any kit yet to raise the rear an inch or two or to stiffen up the rear end. When we tow the bike we also bring clothes for a week, cooler. leather jackets and boots, helmets....etc. The rear of the car is heavy and I lose an inch or two of rear height.
If anyone knows of a solution - plse post or email me. I've called VW dealer - no one had any ideas
Thanks!

you may be surprised by this but if you put in 40mm lowering springs into that car it would go as close to the ground!!
as it is it handles like a ship but with stiffer springs because there is less travel in them its less likely to hit the ground.
if you can find springs that are the same lenght as what you have that are stiffer even better but i dont think you will. maybe from a gti even??
