Question regarding timing

Can any one confirm 1 thing..that on the DIY it says that the dist cap should be point at cylinder #1..what does it mean exactly?I set mine on the *cut* sign that looks like *1* on the black plastic piece thats around the dist, if that makes sense?
also, im thinking to remove my head and check for the bent valves..is it neccessary for me to remove the camshaft and check for them or I could also check by removing direct the whole head and check it from underneath?

thx my car problem is sloved its started now it was timing belt and plug wire were in wrong order.
