 problem with remote control |

Hi everyone,
I drive 98 new beetle and am a having problem with locking/unlocking doors (driver's and passenger's) with remote. This is my situation:
- the red blinking light is on
- vehicle responds to lock/unlock button (makes lock/unlock sound when the buttons are pressed)
- CAN open and lock trunk with remote controller
Definitely not a problem with battery as the remote works for trunk. I don't know what the problem is...just hope it doesnt cost to much $$$ to fix this...
Does anyone know what I can try? before going to a mechanic?
