Please help, I have lost the code for my Gamma radio/casette.

| Radio won't sleep |

My oeq radio VWZ4Z7Y6067413 for my 2000 passat SW no longer goes to sleep when I turn it off, and if I forget to turn it off, it remains fully active even when I lock the door. I understand from my great VW trained independent dealer that it is a common problem. I understand that VW parts will send it in for repair. Anyone done this and gotten satisfaction? Alternately, any suggestions on an alternative replacement?
