pass smog help

I have a 1997 Jetta GL. 2.0 4 Cyl. The check engine light is on. I got it checked at autozone and the thing told me that it was some swith to the fan I think, at least thats what they told me, but I need to pass smog in a couple days and it seams everything I do to the car to fix it the engine light will always stay on its an automatic fail if the check engine light is on,

any suggestions on what to do? to maybe trick it to stay off. What I did last time was clear it with the thing from auto zone, drive it a little and got it checked and I was in the special milliage where everything reset except the last one to turn the check engine light on. If anyone knows a way to get around this it would help a lot.
