you can if it's not rock tight like most are you will either snap the head on your tool or round out the the bolt.
And yes the only tool that works is the Snap-On swivel socket do to it's size Mac,Matco Corwell I have all but the are just a bite to big.

good luck.

I borrowed my buddies Snap On swivel socket and it would not work either. It was more of a roller ball type swivel as opposed to a universal joint type. There appers to be a rounded piece of metal in the bell housing that looks like it rotates. Would it move if I engaged the clutch? Just a thought.

Is your Snap On 10mm swivel socket 6 point or 12 point? I want to make sure that I buy the right one.

Post Finally! But with Bad News Reply with quote
Well, I finally got the pan off. $35 for the Snap On socket, but I needed it. The pan looks even worse than I could have imagined. There are all sorts of metal pieces and a part of a ring, cylinder head perhaps? Also, the timing belt was off and had chewed up the inside of the pan. Looks like it is new engine time. Do I need to remove the front bumper and core support to swap engines like the MK3 series or can I pull it straight up?

Could you explain a little bit? Also, do I have to pull the transmission with the motor or can it be disconnected and left in the car?

How many bolts secure the engine to the tranny? I have removed the 2 around the starter and the 2 on top of the motor. I removed 3 (I think) from the bottom when I removed the oil pan. I see on the passenger side that there is a motor mount and I think there is one on the back of the motor as well but I have not looked yet. Is there anything else I need to do before I pull it?

ok you can leave it in but don't it's way simpler to pull both out.

as for bolts 2 starter 2 on to bellhousing 3 on lower bell housing and one near right side output flange on trans . passanger side axle near trans it come in from the other side. there is jut 2 bolts on the trans mount thats all.

I think I can feel the bolt your talking about that comes in from the opposite side. Then all I have to do is the motor mounts. Why is it easier to pull both motor and tranny? Maybe I'll find out when I go to pull this one. Laughing I better round up a cherry picker for this weekend and find a Bently manual so I can put the new engine in and get everything hooked back up correctly. Also, should I be thinking about replacing the clutch while I am in this deep?

Post Does anybody know why my car is acting like this????? Reply with quote
I have a 2000 Jetta Gls Vr6.I have had it for over two years now.My check engine light came on a few months ago and and I cant get it off.My wifes father is a mechanic and tryed to figure it out and the only thing showing up is a code for the cam sensor and the code is a P0343.I think that it is the catalytic converter that is causeing this problem.I know it was a recall on them but never got around to taking it to the dealership. Also for a few months my car has been not wanting to start. For example...when I get in my car in the morning it starts up but then I will drive it for awhile and then cut it off to go in the store and then turn it back on sometimes it wont start and smoke will come out the exhaust and it will smell like gas.Awefull smell.Could someone please tell me what this is....I was told that it could be the coolant sensor

Post I know it's been a while.... Reply with quote
Well I have the engine suspended by the cherry picker. I just need a bit more clearence to pull it. I went ahead and disconnected the tranny instead of pulling it all as one unit. Should I pull the crank pulley or loosen the tranny mounts to gain clearence? Any advice is appreciated.
