Mk3 1.4 engine swap |
|
Hi all,
I am planning on purchasing a complete 2.0l 16v GTI engine (92k mileage) with the wiring loom at the end of the month for £400. I currently have a 1997 1.4 8v and Im just after a list of things that I also need to get for the conversion.
Im not doing it myself, I dont really know that much about cars so Im paying a family friend who specialises in VW's to do the conversion for me, on the basis that I supply the necessary bits.
Obviously the brakes will need upgrading along with the drive shafts but what else? I just need a list of things so I can have a checklist in front me and then hand it all over to the mechanic!
Cheers

Hello, MMMMMM I am am a millwright . About 1/8 of my trade is making recomendations to improve equipment. If I was doing the job , I would hand my customer the complete list that I require, then help him make intelligent choices. I sujest that if your mechanic does not have a list , that you ask him to sit down with you and agree on one. Allan

Going to want to upsize your exhaust dia, as not to stuff up your engine with unwanted gases and limit performance.
Upsizing the drive shaft makes sense, but I hope you mean drive train as well. Everything transferring the torque from the piston rod out to your CV should be ready for the increase. Are you getting the tranny and clutch along with the engine??

Hello, Durden is correct. Better exhaust systems usually mean a cheap power gain. Often the manufacturer does not just put in bigger brakes, they actually match brakes ,rotors , bearings, axles, springs, clutch, and exhaust system. A number of years ago a neighbor asked me to build a high output v8 to replace his stock V6. I blueprinted the block, bored it .030, balanced and matched all piistons and rods, then the entire rotating assembly. Added a quality intake . He provided all the non engine parts. I fired it up in my shop. My God,without header pipes inside a closed garage I woke up the neighbors. Even with hearing quality protection it was impessive.
The flywheel was ground and balanced as well as the pressure plate and at 7,000 rpm a month later it was real smooth. He went cheap. Put a stock clutch disc in, and a set of nice headers. The next 3 week ends he did the following #1 Twisted the drive shaft. #2 Stripped pinion gear #3 $250.00 ticket #4 $900 ticket #5 24 hr
suspension <booze>, #6 Clutch disc #7 brakes #8 rear axle bearings #9 tranny toast #10 played tag with a semi backwards and lived to tell about it. . #11 His dad delivered truck to my place and borrowed my shop. The motor is now doing really nicely in his dads truck. The son takes the bus. That last impared charge was a 7 year suspension and 4 75,000 to pay for his share of the wreck. I hope you have better sense than he did. Allan

That man learned his lesson the hard way.
Heh, back in highschool me and my buddies put together a 383 plymouth v8 in the shop on a stand and fired er up with just the headers.. man it was so badass lol! we all had massive smiles on our face just revin the shit out of it. We got in trouble from the office because it disturbed all of the classes in the area. It was great.
