Just installed my oil pressure gauge.. I have some questions |
|
i have a 97 golf K2 edition, 1.8L gas manual.
hi, so i just got my oil pressure gauge installed, (removed the oil temp sender, and put in my new oil pressure sender so that i could keep the dummy light for testing purposes) basically, when im at idol it is around 20psi, when the beeper goes off im at 2500rpm, and the gauge reads 50psi, when im around 3000rpm the gauge reads about 65 psi??? do these readings seem correct??? cause im planning to ground out the wire going to the original sender so that the beeping will forever leave me alone.
thanx
Mark~
P.S. oh and, i installed the sender in the oil filter houseing where the oil temp sender usto be. Another guy i talked to said this would be ok, since they are all the same hole, but could i be getting a bad reading because of this?

Al right there has been no change in oil preasures for 18 + years with VW's
In 1985 all models with 1.8 L
preasure was 2.0 bar (29.1 psi) at operating temp with 20w/20 Adl VW grade oil. at 2000 RPM's
In 1990 1.8L all models same preasures some models had low oil presure switch Brown in color .15-.30 bar (2.1 - 6.5 psi)
same high preasure reading 2.0 bar (29.1 psi ) at 2000 rpm.
In 1995 all models 1.8L there was a small chenge.
they did put low preasure and high preasure oil senders in.
they where to help prevent engine damage for low oil.
they was one at the back of the cylinder head and one in the top of the oil cooler housing. one was blue the other white or brown. there where set up to work togeather if one failed the other would read.
preasures did not change from the last 5 years.
the one thing that was added was a preasure vavle inside the oil pump witch was to blow off at 7.0 BAR this was the (101 psi)
and set oil light on till it was checked, also both oil senders would be shorted do to high preasure and keep oil light on.
Now we get to new models 2000 on 1.8 L Turbo 1.9 L TDI 2.0 L and 2.8 VR and V6 motors.
all have one oil sender that reads both low and high oil preasure.
But WOW the oil preasure is still the same. At idle it sould be 1.0 bar to 1.5 bar depends on oil and temp.
Operating temp and at 2000 RPM's 2.0 to 2.5 bar this would be (29 psi to 38 psi)
7.0 BAR is bad and the new vehicles will shut down if oil preasure is to low the car's ECM with shut the fuel and spark off to protect engine from damage.
So 100 PSI would be real bad on a engine. As far as what your oil preasure should be at is all depending on temp of engine oil and how your engine oil gauge is reading the preasure. some gauges have a +/- of 5-8 psi so you need to know this.
a good gauge will cost up near a $ 100 bucks that reads the correct oil preasure as if it was right at the pump.
so hope you find the answers you are looking for but. this is one thing you do not mess with.
and take info that may or may not be right.
I hope for the best.

If your motor has high milage it would not hurt to have a higher grade of oil but do not go to high.
15/40 would be good

hello again, so i was planning on taking a 2 hour trip from brooks to Calgary but instead i ended up taking several 30 minuite trips, since i was having to take a break every 30 minutes or so to let my engine cool and the oil to thicken up. The beeper would be going off unless i was going 130... so, that being said i definitely need to get that thicker oil. I went to check out my local Canadian tire and found out that they only stock 10W40, and 20W50.... now someone recommeneded 15W40 but i cant find it. So which would work better 10W40, or 20W50??? i really have no idea about this kind of thing...
thanx for all of you help
Mark~

if you still have oil concerns you may need to check the oil pump preasure with that oil to see what the pump is doing. as you have high Miles
