High idle, loud squeal when starting. |
|
I have a 2001 (early '01) Passat with a 1.8T. Depending on outside temperatures, when starting the car there will be a loud squeal and high idle (14-1600 rpm) for the first 30 seconds or so. Once it warms the sound goes away and rpm's go back to normal idle. Any clues?

Hello, Good news the idle should do just that on a cold day. Until the engine temperature reaches a set minimum level, it prevents poor combustion. The squeal is probably a loose, contaminated , or failing belt. They are a rotine maintenance item. Allan

Thanks for the reply. The sound has a higher pitch than a belt squeal and will only do it between certain outside temps. I was told today it may be a secondary air pump going bad.

My 2002 Jetta 1.8t does the same thing.
I've found that it is the secondary air pump. It should not sound like that if all is OK. It could be caused by a bad combi valve or solanoid.
Does it sound like this?
