HELP!!! 1994 golf will not start |
|
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forums, My father has a 1994 golf 2.0 5-speed and it does something very weird, whenever the tank gets low, it just quits running.....I can smell the fuel when the engine is cranked, and when it sits overnight after putting gas in it, it runs fine as long as gas is above 1/4 tank. once it gets below that, it will sometimes just die, and not restart. We have already put already put all kinds of new stuff on this thing, distributor, coil, plugs, wires, cap. In my mind, this thing is a POS anyway, but he has to make it last another year before he can get a new car. I am very mechanically inclined, I just dont know a lot of specifics about VW's. It has spark, it has fuel (I can smell it when cranking for a little bit). It's very unusual, and I've never seen anything like this happen.
My father had it towed home, and I got it to start and idle for about 30 seconds, but as soon as I push the gas pedal, it dies. Almost like the Mass Air sensor is being screwy, but there is no check engine light. I'm totally at a loss, the only thing I can think of is that the fuel pump can't keep up with the pressure needed to run the engine above idle, or even at idle most times. I have heard of in-tank fuel pumps getting overheated as they go bad if the tank is low. But I would like to eliminate all the other options before I rip the tank out and fork out 350 bucks for the new pump.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm just not used to working on VW's as I drive Mid-80's toyotas.

it is the fuel pump.
it is over heating like you said.
plus you do not have to pull tank to get pump out there is a nice little cover on tha passager side in the trunk area that you can get to the pump.
good luck

ok, this is starting to tick me off......why does there have to be 6 different pumps listed for this car, I ordered one from NAPA Auto parts and the fuel guage sender doesn't fit. Does anyone have the factory part number for the correct pump for this car? So that I can do a proper crossref on it? I can't believe that they have to make this crap so non-standard. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok you ready
here is your part Number
this is complete with sender and top plate. 1H0 919 051 AK
this Number is for just the pump. 1H0 919 651 P
this replaces the first part Number as it is the new unit. replaces all early pumps it is complete with sender and top plate.
1HM 919 051 M
hope this helps.

Vento with same probs..... |
|
Hi guys
I'm having exactly the same problem with a vento i bought last week. Petrol went down to 2nd red line on gauge and it cut out. Managed to bump it and just about made it home (a further 100 metres). I went and put a gallon in the tank which took it just over the 1st red and it started fine. Ran it for 5 mins and it sounded cool. Came out to start it this morning and it was turning over but seems unable to fuel up to and above idle. Pumping the accelerator gives a very short, feable attempt at a start.
I've found a pump which appears suitable at a very reasonable price £35/$70. I should be able to fit it myself at a push.
I have a couple of questions though?
1. Is the pump located in the same place on the vento's (which i believe is a golf with an ass:)
2. My car is the 1.6L 75hp model - would this be the correct part? [url]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230193974725&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching
All help appreciated guys. I'm really glad I came across this site. Looks like lots of valuable info
Cheers

i had simillar when fuel gets low turned out to be the petrol cap it wasnt letting in air creating a vacuum in tank thus making hard for fuel to be sucked out if you get a rush of air going in tank when removing cap it will be that this seems likley to me because you say its ok after refuel
