 Help! 1997 Jetta wont start |

My daughter got a 97 jetta (her first jar) a few months ago. She has had some problems, the speedometer does not work on occasion, most of the time it does, also, the cruise control does not work, the odometer has not worked on occasion and now it is not starting (sometimes!)
The battery is good, sometimes when she turns the key, it does nothing at all (silence, no turnover) but then, it will start right up a couple minutes later sometimes. Her dad took it in once and of course it did not act up at all for the mechanic. Now, it is not starting moreoften and we don't have money to keep taking it in, does anyone know where to begin with this or what we can have specifically checked out  Thank you!!
