Headlights

Hallo! I am new here and have just added a '91 Passat wagon to my long list of VW's I have owned. I love my Passat (450+ miles on a tank of gas!) but am in a bind with the headlights: the lens covers are pitted and weathered. I tried polishing the lenses with no luck. I went junk-yarding and found a like new pair off a '94 wagon but they do not fit. After doing some research, I tracked down the second owner of the vehicle and was told that the original owner purchased the '91 new in Germany and shipped it back to the US. The '91 has been back and forth b/t here and Europe due to previous owners in the military. Anywho, the headlight lenses are German specs. (ECE not the US DOT or SAE). They are the original, heavy glass lenses that can be removed from the housing assembly by removing a few clips. Any ideas on how to clean up the lenses or where I can get a good set without paying an arm, a leg, and a few fingers?
