Post headlights not working !!! Reply with quote
Confused I am wondering if anyone could help me . I bought a 97 vw golf cl and am noticing some problems .. 1st , I noticed the other night it looked like my headlights weren't on , I pulled over , checked and they seemed to be working ..... I am now thinking those were my daytime lights ,as I couldn't see a darn thing on the road .. second , the right turn light is now not working ... my high beam on the left is burnt out as well .... all of this was noticed AFTER the car was bought .... so , is it bulbs or fuses .... also , any ideas about sunroofs??? mine is completely dead ... motor???

Hello , Like a lot of cars, yours is not new. Salt water from the roads in spring seeps in to some strange places.
Sounds like lack of grounding to the body is one perhaps several of your troubles. Sorry I do not have a Golf manual for that year. However my outdated manual shows the white wire as low beam, the blue as high, and the brown as ground.
2 fuses in the circuit . 10 amp low///15 amp high. Yes there is a relay. I assume you own a test meter and both fuses test fine.? If you have power to the high and low beam wires at the light plug when you should, then try a jumper from the ground wire direct to the battery negative. The other issues may well be corrosion related. Allan

hello, Ditto on the ignition switch repair. I would sujest investing in a cheap ohm /voltage meter and learning how to use it.
Saves me lots of money. Allan

seksililvwgolf97, could you post here when you know what they found was wrong? I have a similar issue on my 2000 Jetta. Although only the daytime running lights / low beams are out now, I suspect after reading through the threads that more is coming.

Also, post how much they charged for the repair if you could. I'm pretty handy with fixing things if I have enough guidance, but I'm thinking unless it's obvious, I might need to take it into the shop too. Sad

Hey, I definately suspect a grounding problem of sorts. They do the funkiest shit sometimes. I had a ground problem that took 30 minutes to fix, but 2 - 1/2 days to find.
Because of a fried brake light connection, I was faced with these symptoms: Signals would fail when brakes applied, rear signals would illuminate along with brake lights???? - weird stuff.

Mechanic shouldn't have much difficulty finding it as they are conditioned to know various grounding points/methods.

- Good Luck!~ Rolling Eyes

p.s. If you suspect it is not a fuse problem.. It probably isn't! (for they are a very isolated and simple technology!)
