Gas mileage on a 2000 VW Golf GL |
|
Hi, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I just purchased a 2000 Golf GL. It has 225,000km on it and I love everything about it. However, I filled up the gas tank last week and barely got 400km off of it till I saw the empty fuel signal. Mind you it was mostly city driving, I thought I would get better mileage from it. Atleast 450 - 500km on a full tank.
Can anyone with a 2000 GL let me know how many kms they get off a full tank of gas? Is there anything in the engine that I can check that may be affecting my fuel efficiency?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there. I drive a 2000 Golf GLS. (2.slow, manual) The worst efficiency I've ever gotten was 460kms out of a tank. That was with a full load and a lot of stopping. Until recent modifications, I used to get just over 500kms out a tank with regular (city/highway)(50/50) driving.
Yours definitely sounds low to me. Is it automatic? How well has routine maintenance been done?- oil changes. Do you have a clean air filter? Did you even burn all 55L?- check that the tank isn't cracked or leaking. Absolutely check that you have proper tire inflation.- the reccommended pressure is on the fuel filler door. I usually go to about 30psi for a happy spot between comfy and efficient.
Nick
PS. I get over 720kms regularly out of my tank now

Thanks Nick. My car is manual transmission. Oil changes have been done regularly with the occasional synthetic oil change here and there. I am going to clean the filter for my air intake and I just filled up my tires to 30psi. I'll let u know how many kms I get on my next full tank of gas. Hopefully a bit more. Thanks.
I do mostly city driving and had the A/C on a lot so I think that contributed to my low mileage.
I'll let u know how that goes.
