 Fuel gauge probs |

Just bought a 2002 VW golf 4motion... and promptly ran it out of fuel! 
The gauge was showing a quarter of a tank left and no 'low fuel' indicator light came on. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? Can it be easily calibrated to work correctly?
Now i'm paranoid about running out of fuel all the time.
Any help appreciated!
