Fuel consumption!! golf 1994 1.8L |
|
it seems to me that my 1994 golf 1.8L is consuming more fuel than it should be, i don't have any engin light on so I don't think that the oxygen sensor is defective, all the car filters have been replaced, could somone suggest what could be wrong, thank you!

gas mileage |
|
Sounds like your injectors are getting dirty and has buildup. The injectors need to be kept clean just like the motor when you change the oil. Routine maintenance should be preventing buildup. You should be running fuel injector cleaner ($2.79 at Autozone for STP) through the car every oil change. (3000 miles) Especially as the car gets older and more miles. Dont overdue it and put more cleaner in a tank than specified, it would be hard on the motor. Only one bottle per full tank of gas. Since you notice a gas mileage change, I would do it 3 times in a roll, run out the tank normal driving, fill up and add one again, and then just routinely with the oil change after that. Also, it is winter time. When is the last time you checked the air in your tires? 5 lbs low can cost you 3 to 5 miles to the gallon.....

good advise!! |
|
Hey thanks for the advise...I have a 97 GOLF TRek and I'm experiencing a fuel mileage problem as well. However, I think it is due to the excessive RPm I am running in 5th gear. I'm at 2800-3000 when a crusing speeds. Any advise as to excessive rpm or is this normal?
Thanks,

I have the same problem with my '98 Golf. When i go down the freeway in 5th gear at about 60 MPH, my engine sits at above 3200 RPM. I'm pretty sure thats normal for the small engine that is in the car, but I get about 350-360 miles on a tank of gas while on the freeway the whole time. You might be pushing the car through the gears too fast while accelerating, or your speeding up and slowing down a lot. All about driving habits.
