Engine code mystery solved!!! Code P1296 |
|
To anyone that has a 1.8t golf or jetta... I have been struggling to figure out the engine code problem my 1.8t gti has been having. The code was P1296, the code reader I rented told me it was a fuel/air metering problem. After doing some research on line and from some of you on this blog, P1296 is a temperature sensor malfunction... After mouths of aggravating repairs and replacements of parts, it turns out to be as very simple fix.
NOTE: If your gti/jetta is approaching 100K miles, to save yourself some time and possible future high repair costs, start replacing as many plastic/rubber (hoses) components as possible. Tooling around in my engine I had some plastic/rubber hoses that have seen better days. From my research, most of the replacement parts unfortunately are only available at the dealer... I take very good care of my gti and love to drive it as much as I can... But I am very frustrated that VW would use so many plastic components on a car that cost more $24K... Replacing the temp sensor, I noticed the location of the sensor in a plastic elbow section...Now that is a big problem in my book because once a crack forms in that section there goes all your coolant and possibly your engine... Take it from me and inspect every plastic/rubber hose or component the engine has, and hopefully it will save you some time and $$$ in the long run...
I wanted to thank "volkshaus" for your helpful tips...
George
