I'd have a similar problem. Picked up a 98 2.0. It was running a bit rough and the valve cover gasket had to be changed. So I cleaned out intake plenum and changed the injector rings since it was right there. Now the car doesn't start. Cranks and cranks fine, but never catches. So I pulled out a plug to see if there's fuel in the cylinder, and there's none. I'm wondering if its the fuel pump not building pressure in the lines.

sounds like a fuel delivery problem. check the fuel pressure at idle and then rev the engine up to 3000rpm and check for a drop in pressure. if there isn't one i've come across clogged exhaust systems that will have the same symptoms. if the fuel pressure drops, replace the pump and sending unit.

yea i agree it does sound like a fuel delivery problem. check the fuel pressure. Is there any oil on the plugs or plug wires? if there is it could be making them short out.
