If I can help it, I drive stick. In fact, my Golf III is a 5-speed. I just hate the idea of a computer telling me how to drive.

.
I learned on an automatic in 1972 . . . started driving a stick in 1982 and never looked back! I like a bit of involvement when I drive. Laughing

I love being able to control my car, i picked up an automatic real quick after learnign on stick, and i kept stomping on the floor trying to find the clutch. My golf i just got is stick. Like it so far, but haven't had a chance to drive it much yet.

To be honest, I think all driver education classes should require their students to drive manual. If a beginner student can maneuver through cones and learn to parallel park all the while with a stick, they will be all set. Then to graduate from drivers ed, they should be required to stop at the top of a steep hill, and without stalling, make a successful left or right turn.

5-speed all the way!!! Just learned a couple months ago, and I like it so much better.

The only time I really prefer an auto is when I'm backing up a large trailer. Hard to deal with two pedals when you're leaning half way out of the truck looking backwards, let alone three. Thank goodness I don't do that very often.

this may be just the place to ask about swapping a auto to a manual in a 88 golf gl 5 door. 1.8 liter got a great deal on the car and it is in beautiful condition just drove it 6 hours straight at 75 to 80mph. I really don't like how it tachs 4 grand at 80 and it is boring to drive hand shifting just don't cut it when you only have 3 gears!!!! Any info would be greatly appreciated

I refuse to drive an Automatic. I started with a 1990 Fox 4 speed, then a 2001 Passat 6 Speed, And now I have my 1996 Jetta 5 speed.
