Post Changing the oil pan - 2001 VR6 Reply with quote
Daughter hi8t sopmething in the road and it rubbed the oil pan and developed a hairlaine crack and is leaking oil. Car is a 2001 Jetta GLS VR6 - 6 cylinders, manual transmission.

Looking at it, it looks pretty straight forward. Are there any tricks or techniques that I should look out for?

I'm a decent mechanic (I have the engine pulled out of my Mitsu 3000 VR4, installing new turbos), but have never worked on a volkswagen before.

thanks

I just pulled the oil pan off of my 1999.5 MK4. It has the 2.0 4 cylinder. I had to get a tube of VW gasket sealer which is designed to seal between cast iron and aluminum. On mine, there were 2 bolts that were under the bell housing that took a swivel socket to remove. The only socket that would work was a Snap On 10mm swivel 1/4" drive. Yours may be different since it is a 6 cylinder.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds pretty straight forward other than a tough bolt or two.

If you are installing turbos on a Mitsu, this oil pan will be easy.

Done. It was straight forward. Hardest part was one bolt under a belt - had to push the belt out of the way a bit. Of course, one trip to the hardware store was required to buy a longer allen wrench set to get to the recessed bolts next to the transmission. Back the the twin turbo TD05 install Smile

I make custom skid plates that that will protect your oil pan. www.raceskids.com is the site and I have ones for BMW's now but VW's are next if there is interest.
