Car wont start and no problems with starter or battery... |
|
My golf wont start! Mechanic told me it was the starter, yet I pulled it and tested it and it was fine, so where should I go from here? When i turn the key lights and windows are functioning. When I turn the key all the way, there is nothing. The next suggestion I have been offered was, "Its your ignition switch". Please help!

is there power on the 50 wire that is on the starter when you are in the crank postion?
use a test light or DVOM to check with a second person trying to crank car.

I get which wire it is now. I just finished putting my old starter back on. How exactly do i do the Light test? The 50 wire has a plug on the end of it that fits onto the starter. Should I take it off the starter, connect the light wires to the plug and crank it with the key?

light test failed on the 50 wire at the starter end |
|
Ok, what next, I am guessing it is my ignition switch. The 50 wire does not have power on the starter end when I crack it over.

ignition, starter switch removal |
|
Do I have to remove the steering wheel to get to the starter switch? I went to buy the part for removing the steering wheel and the auto parts store said not likely that there is a way around it. Is this true?

thank you! And another thing, my cruise control is not working. I noticed that is one of the switches around the steering column. Is this likely my problem? Can I put a new switch in and problem solved!

Thanks again, back to the original problem. I have uncovered the ignition switch underneath the steering column. I removed the cap attached to the switch. According to my VW Manuel:
Ignition/starter switch,
connector assignments
Connector, 8 pin
1 - Terminal 50 (starter)
2 - Terminal 75 ("X - relief"contact)
3 - Terminal 30 (Ground)
4 - Terminal P
5 - Terminal 50b
6 - Terminal 15 (Ignition ON)
7 - Terminal 30 (B+)
8 - Terminal 86s (Key warning
I don't notice a 50 wire leading to the starter connected to the ignition switch. I see 15 and 75. Can I do a test here and why don't I see a wire attached to terminal 50?

One thing I do know is the terminal 15 "ignition on" passes the light test.
