Car wont start and no problems with starter or battery...

50 power goes thru a relay you can not test from ign. to starter.
you would need to jump several wires to get a good signal to starter.
if you have the wiring down do you have the new switch if so plug it in and check to see if she starts.

before I buy a new switch, how likely is the problem in the fusses? A prior mechanic told me to check there.

thats is always the first thing to check.
verify all fuses are good. somtimes you need to pull them out to get a good look.
but the likly hood of it being a fuse. Is very low. i have seen lots a Beatles and golfs with no start butt all lights and every thing works.
If your battery is good and the starter turns over being jumped then there is only the Ignition switch.
