Beetle 1.8T Leaking oil |
|
I have a 2000 beetle with high miles and I have an oil leak...Looks as if its coming from the back of the motor...Sometimes you can smell the oil and see some light smoke coming up...I took it into the dealer this week for a timing belt package and thermostat replacement...I asked them to see if they could find the leak...They are telling me the turbo is bad, that is the cause for the oil...Does this sound right? I wanted some opinions on this first..I really don't know this dealer well and wanted to check on this...Thanks for any help...BTW, the car seems to run great other than the oil leak....Thanks
Rick

sound like you have a oil feed line leak to the turbo.
or it could just be chain tensionor seal leak this is the more likly the concern.

The banjo bolt fitting/washers are loose and leaking. Oil drips onto the exahust below, hence the smoke and stink. VW had brain failure and put the oil feed line and banjo fitting on top of the turbo and there is only 10 mm clearance between the exhaust manifold and the bolt so you have to drop the turbo. Nice job VW!
There is a port that VW could have used on the back of the turbo but noooooooo.... they had to use the top port. Major Morons...
$160 - $300 labor and two 27 cent washers. Leak gone. Takes a lot of power washing to pinpoint the leak but I've done it on four 1.8's in the last three years. Same leak.
Fire your dealer too!
"bad" turbos are indicated by giant clouds of blue smoke out the tailpipe and no power. This dealer should be prosecuted for larceny. A new turbo would be $160 - $300 labor, more than a$1000 for the turbo and two 27 cent washers. Then they give your perfectly good turbo to the pimpley parts delivery kid and they make BIG profits.
I have not been in a VW dealer that I trust since they were selling air cooled Beetles and Type III's.
Find a reputable independant shop that specializes in imports or better yet, German cars.
