99 passat problems... |
|
I just purchased a 99 passat and have recently ran into some problems with it. It drove great for a a couple days, and then I had my stereo system from my old car put in it. After everything got pieced back together and the battery was hooked up, the stereo worked great, but the car would not crank, nor would the windows or sunroof close. The power wire to the subwoofer was disconnected to see if it was drawing too much power but the same thing happened. When the key is turned on, the stereo all works, but the windows do not. When I try to crank the car over, there are a couple of clicks, and nothing. If anyone has any idea what this could be i would greatly appreciate it as i am in college and cannot afford a $1500 bill from the dealership. Thanks

If it clicks more than likely you are not getting enough power from your battery. you might have some thing shorting out and draining your battery from what you say about the windows not working. It might be from where you hooked the cd player up maybe try unhooking it. or you might of blown a fuse. can't be much just backtrack what you did and check for a short.

yes check your battery cable conections on the battery ,make sure there clean and tight, they might have been desturbed during stereo intallation.
if you have a voltmeter you can check and see what the batteries state of charge is (it should be at least 12.4 volts)
if you hold the leads on the battery posts and have someone try to start the car and if the battery voltage drops past 10 volts while your tring to start it ,it's time to replace the battery. the batteries state of charge must be up first for the last test.
also you must have a good (clean and tight)conection from battery negative post to the block or transmission.
if the battery is weak or conections are poor that could pretty much kill everything windows included.
it may be a poor conection at the starter to, sometimes there is a take off there to supply power to a few other places aswell.
I hope it's just an easy fix. Good luck

sorry to have to say this, but I have a 99 Passat and was told under no circumstances replace the stereo, doing so will kill the car. I don't know if there are any work-arounds on this but it sounds pretty risky. I've found the Passat is a very complex beast with all sorts of strange interconnections ...

I had a problem with the exact same thing in my 99 passat. I actually found that the main box that controls the windows, sunroof, locks, etc is directly under the drivers seat. The weird thing about this car is if the windows and sunroof don't work, then the car won't start. Once I pulled up the carpet under the drivers seat I found that the wires for the windows, sunroof and power locks (my power locks weren't working either) had gotten wet somehow and basically corroded the wires so there was no connection. I just took a few but conectors and some extra wire I had and reconnected everything and it all started to work. If you have any questions about it you can email me at sing4thelord07@yahoo.com. Hope that helps.
