98 VW Polo Radio Problem!!! |
|
Bought a brand new Sony CDX-GT5OUI to replace the old factory tape player. Anyway, installing it was fine, no problems there what so ever. Then it wasnt saving any of the radio channels or the clock. So as I went to take the stereo out to change the switched and permanent live cables, I noticed one of them arced against the bracket.....
Predictably, the stereo hasnt worked since. Ive checked the fuse in the stereo and the 15A fuse in the fuse box. All were fine. Ive got voltage at that black plug thing that goes into the stereo (both with ignition on and off). I even put the old factory radio back in just to see if the new one was knackered, but that one refused to work either!!
Its probably somthing painfully obvious, but im pulling my hair out here! Anyone have any idea?

Just had another mess around with it. The stereo is still dead, apart from it will still load/unload CD's. But still nothing on the display...

I just installed a sony stereo i bought from halfords earlier today...... first came on and was all dandy, then it just made disk in disk out noise and no display....
I had a bit of a play and discovered if I turn the key forward sooil lights etc light up and then tweak it back a bit slowly....the radio lights up and everything starts working....but as soon as you turn the key forward to start the car...nothing!!!
Give it a go on yours and see if its the same...how to fix it i haven;t figured out...if you know..can you tell me.

Yeah I sorted it all out in the end. It turns out that when it shorted on the metal casing, it burnt out the ignition cable. It turns out that you need power to both for it to all work, but as there was power being supplied to one (one cable being burnt out) it wasnt working.
So I had to wire a new cable back to the fuse board.
Not sure if this is the same in your case. Try swapping the red and yellow cables over (switched and unswitched supply). They should be red and yelllow anyway. What model is your Sony stereo? If you have a look in the installation guide, there should be a little section about the power supply.
