I just purchased a 1998 new beetle for my girlfriend about 5 month's ago, About 4 month's ago we started having problems with the speedometer. When we get to speeds between 65-70 the speedometer starts jumping back and forth between 60 and 70 and cruise controll is no longer able to be used if you do try to use the cruise control once it engages the car starts jerking untill you release the cruise control. Any idea's what this could be? It's a 1998 new beetle with a 2.0 engine - automatic thanks for the help.

Just the check engine light, which stays on at all times.

this will more than likley tell you the problem. Smile
there may be faults in the transmission and this lets you know to have the vehicle scaned to check what is going on.

keep us informed

I have this same problem I let the autozone ppl hook it up to a reader and they said the speed censor is broke or summat. im wondering if ima just drive it like it is and just follow the other cars speed or just get it fixed. right now getting fixed sounds like a waste of moneys since ive been driving with it like this for awhile now.
