'94 jetta oil light |
|
Ok, i picked this car up for free. I have no idea on the history of it. It has been a pain in the rear so far.
I had to put a thermostat in it last week.
Since then when the temp gets up to the 200-230 range on the temp gauge the oil light/alarm comes on intermittently. I thought it varied on RPM but not the case after all.
I put a oil switch in it, the one on the filter head, and it still is doing it.
So my question is, is there a good spot, oil galley, for me to put a gauge on it to check oil pressure? I see the oil switch on the filter is straight thread and not pipe. I would like to find a place that will accept a pipe fitting.
Also dealer tells me there are 2 oil switches on this engine. One on the head and the one on the filter head. They also claim the one on the filter is a temp switch, but the one i pulled out was a switch with a hole on the end. Not a copper or brass end typical to me of a temp sensor.
I am not at home right now to check the one on the cylinder head.
Also dealer claims to have issues with after market oil filters not having proper flow regulators like the VW filters do. I am using a NApa gold filter. Any one experience issues with the Gold filters on these?
thanks, sorry for all the questions.
I just hate to have to put a different engine in this car. I all ready have close to $1000 into it just to make it run and to be safe. I am not done either as it still needs complete rear brakes and a front wheel bearing, strut, and spring.....

Ok first your oil filter there are some problems with after market Filters not all. I would try a Fram or Wix first as this is a easy check.
as for the oil preasure the one sender at the oil filter cooler housing is you high preasure sender. the one at the head is low preasure sender. they are both not pipe thread.
Go to napa and find a brass adaptor for you oil preasur gauge. to check you oil preasure.
preasure should be 29 psi at idle with oil temp at operating temp.
if you do not have this they there may be a pluged pick up in engine.
what year and motor is the car?

Thanks for the psi. That will help tons.
As far as the filter, I am going to check pressures and the low PSI switch first and go from there. I could go into details of filters we cut open to examine the filtering and regulators, but i won't bore you. I do trust the Napa gold though.... but we will see.
Napa did not have the fitting.... at least the rookie on saturday did not know of one. I was going to stop in to my prior employers and pick up a hose and fitting there for the straight thread fitting. I know we used to sell them. I won't be able to get to the side of town though until we get back from vacation.
I ordered the low psi switch today for giggles. For 8 dollars i am willing replace it. At 173K miles it could be bad.
The car is a 1994 with 2.0L, gas, automatic.
thanks again, i will let you know.

Picked up a OEM oil filter tonight and the dealer said i should be running 15w40 instead of 10w30 with 173,000 on my gas engine . My garage thought 10w30 would be fine.
My light is still on, i replaced both switches and oil filter. I going to do a pressure check when we get back from vacation.
Would you recommend bumping the oil up to 15W40 before i do the check? Manual claims 10w30 would also be fine.

no do not change oil. check your oil preasure first you may just have a plugged pick up screen or bad preasure relief inside oil pump. check preasure then. go from there.
Have some good clean fun on Vacation.

ok, we are back. Had fun while it lasted.
Back to the car. Changed senders and filter. still came on. As a temporary bandage (i needed to drive the car) i did put 15w40 in it. The light stays off unless i am on the express way. Then it comes on at about 40mph. any thing above or below it does not.
I checked oil pressure tonight. At normal engine operating temp and at idle it had about 22psi. I know you said it needed to be 29 but i have a question. I read my Haynes manual and that said that it should be 29psi at normal temp and 2200 rpm. Obviously idle is not 2200rpm. Any thoughts to this?
