I noticed my steering get stiff the other day and the pump start to whine. When I topped up the fluid and had a look, it seems tha it is dripping out of the power steering rack boot. Is this a common problem on these? Anyone know if it is pretty easy to change (any set up required) etc.? Do they sell rebuild kits for the seals in them or do you normally have to get the whole rack assemby? Any help would be appreciated.

Cool I was looking for just the lines on my Jetta 2001 steering rack. The lines are rusting and will soon be leaking I found boots for the racks. As far as parts for the powering steering rack I found none. I have ordered the whole steering rack for my Jetta from Advanced Auto parts they matched the lowest price I could find in my area was Carparts Warehouse at $252. Advance gives a life time limited warranty where the other sellers give like a one to three year warranty. One internet seller offers a seven year warranty and the part for $203 they do not have it. They take your order then go order it from somewhere and it does not show up I canceled with that outfit called volkswagenpartstore.com.
You have to jack up the car. I am going to remove the rack in my garage with the wheels off. First step is to go inside the car remove the cover over the lower end of the steering column where the steering universal ties onto the steering rack. Alldatadiy.com says the universal can be pullled up and off of the steering rack gear of course after removing the universal tie bolt. AlldataDIY says to remove the steering tie rod ends from the wheel ends. VW shows removing the tie rod ends from the rack. I think VW is all wet on this you need a special VW tools to do it VW's way. You need an engine jack or a good floor jack to support the engine. You remove the steering tie rod ends form the wheel ends. Then support the engine on a engine jack or in my case a floor jack. Then Alldatadiy.com says to remove the bolts holding up the engine sub frame looks like about six main big bolts, and that aft car to subframe link rubber isolated link. Alldatadiy says to lower the whole assembly a little to get the rack out. VW says to clamp the fluid lines with their special tools before removing the lines. Looks like a C clamp with a fancy knob that squeezes the return line and the pressure lines rubber portion of the hose. I am going to use vise grips with some smooth blocks of wood in the vise grips to prevent cutting the rubber hoses. Clean all connection spic and span before removing any connections. cover all removed line connections with ziplock baggys and tie wrap. The Alldatadiy site says the rack comes out from the bottom. I also read another site where someone said they got the rack out the left side of the car. I also have a heat shield above my rack I am going to remove that first before removing the bolts and clamps that hold the rack to the car. One of the lines is broken loosen after you start to lower the rack from the car according to alldatadiy.com When installing VW says to center the rack but the way they show to center it is with the boots off most rebuilt steering racks come with the boots already on any how if you have the boots off VW says at least on my 2001 Jetta the rack is centered with 1.2 inches coming out of the end rack and pinion. The VW manual says to replace all bolts and nuts removed from what I can read because of VW dumb way of torguing then turning the bolts or nuts another 1/4 turn dumb. VW also says to replace all the seals removed mostly I see are the seals at the banjo bolts where the hoses connect to the steering rack. VW needs to learn how to use bolts and nuts that do not need this extra 1/4 turn so the bolts and nuts are reuseable in my book. Well all the above information is not how VW says how to do it so you are at your own risk here using any of the above information. I have found the alldatadiy.com site to be invalueable the VW manual I have the expensive Brantley one stinks for its explainations. I would go sign up for alldatadiy.com I only paid something like 14 bucks for the service. Well good luck.
