Greetings All:
I just joined this morning. I am the proud owner of an 86 Golf ( 1.8 L Gas)with 56000 actual miles that I just won on EBay.

I have a lot of VW maintenance experience having owned several VW Rabbit Diesels from the 80s. I have never owned a gas version, however.
I will be relocating from Mossy Head, Fl in the very near future to my family home in Front Royal, Va. I got a new job with Pinkerton Government Services and will be using this Golf for my 120 mile daily commute to Dulles, Va.
1st question:
Is the 1.8 an intereference motor like the Diesels? I have no idea when the timing belt was last changed on this car, and don't want to take a chance.
thanks,
Tim Steele in Mossy Head, Fl

Hello, Nice ride. I have its grandpa. Poor old diesel has 650,000 kms or 390,000 miles. Still a good old boy, however the RCMP, politely sujested that put him out to pasture. Now he's a organ donor.
Belt failure is a big expense and stupid. This is how I look at belts.
First , belts are cheap. $30.00 or so. Some easily go 100000 miles. Some don't Tow trucks have not cost $30.00 in years. With my luck $130.00 is more likely. Breakdowns ////// at home??? My luck runs more towards being in the center lane of Interstate 5 in rush hour. All traffic halts. About an hour later the other lanes start. WOW all the frustrated drivers in my lane are saluting me. I am smiling and wishing I had changed my belt.
My advice change the belt and the tensioner bearing. The peace of mind is worth the small cost Allan
