Hello everyone,
I just bought a 2008 jetta 2 months ago and sadly, I lately bumped into sth from underneath that broke my gearbox.
I went to the repair shop and they said it had to be changed. It will cost nearly one third of the car's price here in Egypt. so I thought
I could inquire about its price abroad such as Europe or the states. I was wondering if anyone knew how much it costs in his country.
It's a 6-speed automatic gearbox. would really appreciate your feedback. Take care

Hello from Canada, Sorry to hear about your bump. New transmissions are always very expensive. Just what is damaged? Transmission cases can be welded , and further after welding machined true after this. Without knowing a lot more I cant comment further. A good question is can it be sucessfully repaired in a proper facility that specialises in manufacturers warranty aproved automatic transmission repair at less than new cost or not. I would look on ebay motors and see if someone is selling a wreck for parts, such as one that has been hit beyond repair from the rear. In North America there exists an extensive Auto Wrecker network . They have an independant computer system . Contact any one with your price request and it goes to about 5000 sets of eyes. You may well find someone with just what you need. Allan

Hi Allan,
Thank u so much for replying. Well, I dt know that much about cars but I'll tell u what the guys at the dealership told me. they said that the
gearbox is made up of 2 parts, a part they call here the brains, I think that's a computerized part that they say costs a lot of money, then comes the rest of the gearbox.
at first they said that if the 'brains' is alright, they can just change the case or sth of that sort. but they opened up the gearbox 2day and it turns out that the 'brains' part is
damaged. so we have to change all of it. As regards welding, there's another shop that proposed getting the 'brains' part from a used car and welding the box, but
the thing is I dt really trust the welding option, I'm not sure it would be as good as before and the car is only 2 months old.
since u brought up North America, what I know is that the Jetta is German but the only factory in the world that assembles the Jettas is in fact in Mexico. Does that mean
I can find the part there like u said?
One more thing, (sorry for the long msg), I can't help wondering how this happened in the first place. I was driving at a 40km/hr speed, what I bumped into from underneath
was a regular speed bump. the thing is I was stupid enough to pull the brakes while on the bump not before riding over it. they said that doing such a thing lowers the car
and that's probably why the gearbox got broken. I get that but I'm not convinced that that's the only reason. To get a better picture, u'll need to understand that speed bumps here are higher than those in Europe or the states and aren't as smooth. but still, I used to drive a Nissan, a Renault Megane and an A150 Mercedes and I bumped into as many speed bumps as anyone could and nothing like that ever happened. That's why I'm thinking about taking pictures of the broken gearbox as it is in my car and reporting this case to the main Volkswagen company through mail. Do u think that's a good idea?
