2002 Jetta Wagon OBD II P0321

Hello,

I am a first time VW driver and first time reader here.
I have a 2002 Jetta Wagon 5 speed that I've had for about a week
and have driven over 500 miles no problem. I ran the car out of gas
thinking the reserve was more than it was and after putting a few gallons
of gas in the tank, she doesn't want to start but will with much effort
and the EPC light is on as well as the check engine. I recovered a code
from the ECU for P0321. Any ideas anyone?

you have a engine speed sensor taht has faled or is going out.

P0321 is Ignition/distributor engine speed input cicuit range/performance intermitent

this sounds like you have a bad engine spped sensor.

hope this points you in the right direction.

Is this also called the cam shaft sensor?
If so, where on the engine is it located??
Can it be tested with a DVOM?

No it Is not the cam Sensor it is located at lower engine area near the end of the engine block just above the oil pan. It has one bolt holding it in and only one wire going too a 3 pin conector. at center of engine area. yes it can be check with a DVOM it should be a nice Square wave patteran with four patterns for each cylinder they are all the same but you r metter may not pick it up fast enough.

I am uploading 3 images.
Two of what I believe to be the sensor you refered to and
a third of a wire plug not connected to anything, I searched
for an empty connection for this plug but found none.

Any help is appreciated.

sorry those are your Knock sensors.

if you look at your orange dip stick tube follow down you will see two conectors one is black one is gray.
they are both 3 pin the gray one is your engine speed sensor.

you can trace the wire back to the sensor it is in the lower right of the engine at the rear near the bell housing.

close to starter on block.

O.K. I located the sensor.

The plug was a bear seperating from the sensor and in the process
the plastic cracked. I'll deal with that later.

I removed the single bolt holding the sensor but damn...how do you get
the sensor out??? It rotates about 60 degrees but will not come out.

I don't want to man-handle and risk breaking anything inside the engine.

Ideas?

it's ok it is a hall affect sensor there is nothing holding it. but a o-ring that seal it to the block. it's always stuck do to the o-ring.

I'm about to junk this car.

I replaced the sensor and $130 later the &%$#@ car still will not start
and continues to give the P0321 code.

I thought you where going to test it? Confused

do you have spark?

if so then you need to check to see if the injectors are firing.

remember always verify failure before puting in parts. it will save you a lot of money down the road.

if the fault is still present it means there is not enough engine spped. thats what triggers the fault. the engine is not firing off and the ECM knows it.
that is why that fault is coming back.
look at all basics fuel, spark, timming,compresion to make sure you did not miss somthing simple.

I just looked over this again from the firts post you said you ran out of gas.

you put gas in it and it wont start.

do you hear the fuel pump run when you are cranking.

pull the fuel line off th efeed line to th efuel rail to see if there is fuel coming out while cranking.

if not smack the bottom of the fuel tank with your HAND. See if the fuel pump starts again. If so there is you problem have seen maney fuel pumps just stop running. It is still a electric motor with brushes and a commutator that can lock up do to bad conections.
