2001 AC Fuse/Relay - why is the AC not working? |
|
Good Morning:
Q: I have a 2001 GTI VR6 with AC problems, the fans work but the air is warm. - does the a/c have a fuse and/or relay? If so, where are they? I hope the problem is a bad fuse and not a compressor gone south.
A: ACCORDING TO THE DEALER: there is no fuse or relay - the only fuse is located on the radiator fan itself.
Q: From dealer does the radiator fan work?
A: I tested the radiator fans and confirmed that when the internal heater/ac fan is on, so are the two external radiator fans.
Q: Next STEP: What else could the ac problem be? and how do I test to verify if the equipment is functioning correctly? - HELP!
thx

I had the same problem with my 2000 Golf. Took it to the dealer and they said my compressor etc was shot wanted $1500 to replace everything. Have sourced parts for about $400 and will try to do the job myself...

There's no fuse or relay. The A/C compressor signal comes from pressure switch which is located by firewall at passanger's side. When there's either low refrigrent or high pressure is built up, it cuts off the voltage to the compressor. The switch also gives signal to the second fan for condenser. Make sure you have enough refrigrent. Turn on A/C and check the voltage to compressor. Unplug connector on top of compressor (green & white wires) and check the voltage. If you get 12VDC, the electrical section is fine, most probably the clutch of the compressor.
I had problem with my compressor clutch. Bought used from ebay for about $125 and replaced it myself, not too hard. After installing compressor I started the A/C without R134. Neither fan nor clutch came on. After the refrigrient they both worked fine. Make sure there's refri. and no leak. If you need pictures for how to remove compressor let me know.
Here's where pressure switch
