1987 VW GTI Son's first car - NEED HELP, WON'T START

Help!! Just bought my son his first car. A 1987 VW GTI, newer engine, all tricked out, very cool car. Drove it home last night no problems. He drove it over to a friends today, no problem until he went to leave and it wouldn't start. It turns over, and in fact starts for about 2 seconds and then sputters and dies. I put more gas in it because it seems starved for gas, no luck. I checked the fuel pump fuse and it seems fine. Help, any thoughts? Sad

Hi there i had a very similar problem with my 87 gti a few years back tried alot of different solutions and had no joy turns out while stripping the injection system i found an small inline cone type filter hidden inside a bolt on the main inlet of the injection system that was blocked with crap from fuel tank, a quick clean with petrol and hey presto started first time ,probably lasted a few months then i had to do it again although a new inline filter would have been better but when i spoke to someone at vw he told me he couldnt get hold of one .I hope this helps certainly saved me a head ache and a few quid

the metering head can give trouble sometimes. if you loosen the main pipe for pump os there pressure there??
