I was thinking of cleaning my engine compartment with degreaser until I saw a reference in the owner's manual about a protective
coating that was applied at the factory and should not be washed off. Has anybody heard of this before? Can the coating be reapplied? I can't believe you are never supposed to clean the engine....

I detail my engines every other time I wash the vehicles, Jetta included. I spray it down with water, spray either Purple Power of Simple Green over everything and let it set about 10 minutes. I rinse it off and when it is dry I wipe the plastic parts and belts down with Armour All or a like product. I have never had any problems and I like being able to always inspect and work on a clean engine. Very Happy

the coating is just Bee's wax unless you are going to high preasure wash it's pretty hard to get all of it off.

As eagleeye Had stated it's ok to wash the engine bay just do not us high preasure washers.

just the hose with spryer is fine. little degreaser is ok just not to mutch and use a good protective for you plastic. I use Zymol only it's very exspensive but last a long time.
