02 passat transmission |
|
I am new to this forum. I own a 2002 passat wagon that has automatic trans with tiptronic..I rarely use the tiptronic at all. Every three days or so I have problems with the tranny, seems like it happens more often when the car is warmed up (runs better when its cold). The tranny has a difficult time getting out of all gears, the higher the gear the harder the change. It will rev up to 4000 to 5000 before it changes. The change is just as bad when it downshifts as well-jumps at stops etc. I talked with my service rep--he said to bring it in--but it might be the control that is under the seat??. Has anyone had the same problem, have any advice or heard of this problem before (im sure its been discussed)..I dont want to spend big money on a tranny repair right now, esp when i can use the tiptronic..any suggestions would be appreciated..if more info about the tranny is needed I will give it to you..thanks so much

I have the same problem with a 1999 Passat I bought not even a week ago. Beautiful car, but the rpms sky rocket without me going anywhere, Don't really enjoy using the tiptronic. Very "jerky" when stoping and starting.
I'm brining it in on Thursday, if you get any news on it, pelase do share, I think we may have the same problems.
You don't think it will require a new transmission do you? (I pray it won't!)

I'm having a similar problem. I have a 2000 passat and everything was running fine up until about 2 days ago. for whatever reason, the tranny is not shifting. Yesterday, it took about 5 minutes for the tranny for finallly shift from the first gear and it was fine after that. But today, it wont shift inter reverse, and it will either get stuck in 1st gear or 3rd gear. Its pretty weird. I'm a little scared driving it around like that. I'm going to try to take it in on Tuesday. If anyone has any ideas of what is wrong with my auto, please let me know... Hope both of you ( djmcl7 & patrickcolm) find a solution... I hope we dont need new trannys

ok similar problem...well i don't really know. My RPMs are ok, and the gears are ok too...but for some reason it makes a noise every time i press the gas pedal it sounds as if a piece was hitting something else. or maybe the enginee i am really mad...i don't know what to do and shops here charge big money just to check it. I really like it is a 2001 Passat, 1.8 turbo. i just bought it too. so i am very disapointed in VW...Please advice

Hey guys, i have the same problem as all of you and i know exactly how you guys are feeling. I am new to this forum and it's great to know that we are all trying to help each other out. I just recently purchased an 02 Passat 2.8 liter from an auction without a warranty. As i drove it more and more, i realized the transmission needs to be checked because it would jump at stop signs or have trouble shifting or delayed shifting. So i took to a local VW dealership to check it out and they said the transmission was not functioning correctly and they had to order a part from Los Angeles that cost $1500 dollars. This is too much money to spend on a car that i haven't even had for a month. I am very disappointed because this is a lot of money to pay and i just bought it. Also the cost to get warranty is expensive as well. So i would appreciate it very much if you guys can give me some advice. Thank YOu
Sean

Patrickcolm, thanks for posting your comments. We were googling to see if anyone else was experiencing what we were experiencing and came across your posting.
We have a 2002 Passat Wagon. Bought it new. Recently (within the last 6 months) the high RPM/delayed automatic shifting has been occurring as well. Not as much when it first started and more and more so now. Tends to be more on the up shift than coming down. When the RPMs race, I shove it over and use the tectronic to manually shift up (or down) rather than wait for it to shift correctly, which it will eventually do. I also took it to the VW dealership while the power train is still under warranty. They kept it for ~4 hours and said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I haven’t had a very positive experience in the customer service department with either of the two VW dealers that are local, so I’m suspicious of them “not finding anything” while it is still under warranty, (but close to being out of warranty). I have no solutions, only the same problem.
This is our first and will be our last VW.

HI - New forum user here,
This may sound incredibly dumb,
but in the past I had some wierd
behavior from a transmission,
and all was OK after we topped
up the transmission fluid.
A cheap fix if it works! I have 2002
Passat
